Magnetic Fields Reimagined - Where Surrealism Meets A.I.
2022
Centered around the theme “Missing Stories”, the project reinterprets the first surrealist literary work, Breton and Soupault’s "The Magnetic Fields" (1920), by combining surrealism and artificial intelligence.
Using Machine Learning mechanisms like RNN (for text generation) and VQGAN+CLIP (for visuals), we created a book composed mostly of AI-generated content.
Magnetic Fields Reimagined examines the relationship between humans and machines, mirroring the automatism of surrealism while exploring how AI attempts to emulate nonsensical yet creative writing, characteristic of Breton’s work. Unlike Breton’s automatic writing, which reflects subconscious thought, this project utilizes automation to replicate and reinterpret surrealist methods, producing a gradually more abstract and blemished presentation across its pages.
